My New Love Affair

If a drug company created a drug that would decrease your mortality by 50%, would you take it?

I bet you would!  But what if I told you that your lifestyle could do that for you?  Studies have shown that by following a Mediterranean diet, moderate exercise, not smoking, and moderate alcohol intake that you can decrease your overall cause of mortality by 50%!

But we all know this already.  Every single person knows that having a healthy lifestyle extends your natural life.  It’s common sense.  But if it’s just as simple as caring for your body, the only one you will have, why does it seem like it’s such a hard thing to do?

We take supplements upon supplements and excessive amounts of vitamins, in hope that it can counteract poor lifestyle choices.  But does it even work?  Whole foods are more chemo-protective than supplements.  For example, did you know that 1000mg of Vitamin C daily has been shown to decrease your risk of stomach cancer?  So let’s say you take a vitamin C supplement…did you know that a small glass of orange juice contains only 37 mg of Vitamin C, but is 2 times more likely to reduce your risk of developing stomach cancer?  There is something in a whole orange that is more chemo-protective than Vitamin C.

As I said before, my latest obsession is Vitamix.  I have always steered clear of this product, only because of its steep price point.  However, a very talented salesman working at my local Wegman’s, (representing Vitamix) made a few various drinks, and my husband and I loved how we couldn’t even taste the spinach or avocado in these drinks.  My one year old was devouring it!  Everything was absolutely delicious!  And so began my love affair with Vitamix:)

The past few days I have been reading all about the benefits of whole foods and I have been mixing like crazy!  I’ve never felt so energized!  I have found guiltless dessert recipes that my older children love!  I couldn’t get them to eat an avocado before, but when I combined two avocados, a sweetner of my choice (I used organic raw agave,) organic, powdered, unsweetened cocoa, and a bit of coconut oil, I have transformed this superfood into an amazing chocolate mousse that no child would turn down.  Not to mention a great alternative to my chocolate ice cream that I adore!  Vitamix even has a fantastic alternative recipe for ice cream, and it’s just as good, if not BETTER!  But it doesn’t stop there!  This machine is amazing!  It makes fresh pesto, sauces, dips, soups, (yes, soups in 7 minutes,) and even kneads bread!  I have to try to control myself because I just want to make everything!

If Vitamix sparks your interest, as it did mine, don’t hesitate.  This product is amazing!

I know it’s expensive, but if you consider the amount of money you spend on supplements, in addition to healthful foods, it will save you money, and in all honesty, improve your life.  I am excited to share more about the benefits of whole foods in my upcoming posts!

If you want to purchase your own Vitamix, follow the link below!  This is the model I have, and the model referred to in the cookbooks.  I will be sharing my favorite recipes, as well as everything you need to know about a raw diet.

Michelle, I have gone back & forth on buying this because of the price alone. I recently read a book called “Green for Life” which sparked my interest in the green smoothie. Amazing how you can drown out the taste of the greens with fruit. My question is this: What do you feel is the greater advantage in having a green smoothie from a regular blender versus the Vitamix?

Honestly Lisa, I never made a green smoothie before Vitamix. What I can say is that the Vitamix does 37.000 rotations per second, in comparison to a normal blender that does anywhere between 5,000 and 8,000. I made a drink yesterday with an entire one inch chunk of ginger. This machine, regardless of how solid or soft the food is, creates a completely smooth consistency. There’s no pulp. There’s no chunks. And it is so powerful that you can throw in fruits and veggies in their whole form. You can consume a lemon rind without being able to tell and in turn, ingest all the fiber and vitamins that you usually toss in the trash. Also, the vitamix is capable of creating things well beyond smoothies. Fresh, whole food soups are created in 5-7 minutes because this machine’s motor is so strong that it actually heats. It’s unreal. Sorry, but I’m in love with this thing!

Ok this makes sense. This morning it took me much longer than I needed to make my breakfast smoothie, as I had to keep shuffling around the ingredients for it to blend. Not to mention I still got chunks of kale when I was done. I am liking the idea that it blends fruits/veggies in whole form. Saves alot of prep time too. Thanks!
